Q: What is Textbook Union?
A: Answer: Textbook Union is the online “hub” that connects all online textbook marketplaces together. Simply put - we help students find the cheapest price for their textbooks.

Currently, fourteen different vendors such as Amazon.com and Half.com are listed - and we’re looking to add more all the time. Additionally, the textbooks for sale from individuals at each of these sites are also listed. Finally, any textbooks for sale via Textbook Union’s visitors are also listed.

Q: Aren’t there like a million other textbook websites? Why do we need another?
A: Answer: Not a million – but close. These websites fall basically into three categories.

1.) Vendors: Amazon.com, Barnes and Noble, and Half.com are all examples of vendor website. Textbooks are listed and sold by either publishers or individual sellers. Generally they have the low prices and a comprehensive selection.

2.) Book Swaps: These are generally non-profit websites created by student organizations. The best example is CampusBookswap.com. Students are to buy and sell books to each other free of charge.

3.) Price Comparison: A great example is Pricewatch.com. Prices are gathered from vendors and listed.

Textbook Union is combination of a book swap and price comparison. Our pricing engine is nearly as robust as anything available ensuring the lowest price possible. However, it has features that aren’t available anywhere else. We process the required textbook listings from individual universities to make it as simple as possible to find your book. We not only allow you to sell your textbook, but also to find the proper price at which it will sell.

These features and more won’t be found anywhere else, and are the reason Textbook Union stands out from the crowd. Best of all, it’s free.

Q: How much is the on-campus bookstore ripping me off?
A: Answer: It depends on your definition of “getting ripped off”. According to the National Association of College Stores, new textbooks are marked up from retail an average of 22.53% and 34.90% for new and used textbooks. Those numbers are large enough, but the difference is even greater when you consider that many sellers are willing price their books even lower. That’s why generally speaking the online price difference and campus store greater.
Q: Who supports Textbook Union?
A: Answer: Currently, the website was leaded in development from members from the Ferris State University Student Government and was unanimously approved by the Association of Michigan Universities.
Q: Where do the lists of required textbooks come from?
A: Answer: Directly from the source – the university. Depending on the school, it is delivered via email or on paper. The information is than reformatted into our database and is then used to power the pricing engine (among other things). We don’t just make it up.
Q: Are the book lists accurate?
A: Answer: As accurate as humanly possible. If we are not given information for a course no book data is added for that course. It’s as simple as that. We’d rather have an incomplete list than have students purchase the wrong book. After we receive the list, the information transferred to our database and the ISBNs are automatically verified via our quality control system. They are than double checked for accuracy.

Still, error may occur but 99.99% of the time it results in no title being found rather than the incorrect title being added. Accuracy is extremely important to us.

Q: Why isn’t my school listed?
A: Answer: There are a few possible reasons. The first is because we haven’t requested the information from your school. The second is because your school denied our request. The third is because we didn’t have the time to add it. Some school’s list of required textbooks spans 2,000 pages. This list must be recompiled each semester. It takes a lot of work to add a given school.
Q: How can I have my school added?
A: Answer: Contact us at addschool@textbookunion.com and let us know what school you attend. We’re trying to add as many as our resources allow - but the more interest we receive from a specific school means we will try to add them sooner.
Q: Can I still use the site if my school isn’t added?
A: Answer: Absolutely. Use the column on the left of the buy screen to search for any book. You just need to know some information about it.
Q: Why aren’t some books listed as in stock at any vendor?
A: Answer: Some course materials are only available from the smallest publishers or at the university itself. It just isn’t available online yet.
Q: How do I buy a book?
A: Answer: See the “help” section.
Q: How do I sell a book?
A: Answer: See the “help” section
Q: How much can I save online?
A: Answer: It really depends on the title, but inital useage reports an average of around 50%. We're conducting a full study that will be available within the next week. Check back soon.
